Problem

Setting up Amazon Alexa for the Sony TV was a complex process that required coordination of the smart device, mobile app and TV. Jumping between these platforms, testing indicated that users weren’t sure of when setup was actually complete across the systems and what Alexa could do on their Sony TV. There were lots of customer complaints on the Sony TV Skills for Alexa, bad ratings and negative reviews about Sony TV-Alexa setup process, learning curve and connectivity.

Solution

Addressing these users needs, the setup experiences needed to provide better feedback and communication of the status when synchronizing steps between the mobile app and TV app. Additionally, adding a hub where users can go view the functions and voice commands available to them was critical.

Impact:

Redesigned Sony’s “TV Control for Amazon Alexa” App by improving setup experience, adding more support for users when revisiting the platform, and a new voice portal hub for better discoverability of Alexa’s capabilities on the TV [shipped in FY20].
